What ever happened to the
Wonderful Skunk and Opossum
web site.
Well... for any die-hard folks who are still waiting for it to come back --
I hate to disappoint you but I doubt it's going to happen.
When I first created the Wonderful Skunk and Opossum web site the World Wide Web was a relatively small place... I can only guess the number of web pages available on the internet is at least over 100, possibly over 1000 times greater than the number of pages there were when I first started.
Skunks and opossums have for a long time been my favorite small critters and when I first looked for information on them on the internet I found there really wasn't all that much. I wanted to change that. I had also started learning HTML code so I could actually make it possible.
Over the years I had collected some interesting and unusual information about skunks and opossums and wanted to make that the focus of the Wonderful Skunk and Opossum pages. Things were going pretty good. Then the problems started coming.
Big problem #1, E-mail.
I started getting e-mails from people with skunk or opossum questions. I encouraged
this at first since I had a number of pretty good resources -- eventually this
became a bit overwhelming and I had to question the quality of my advice.
You see ... even though I like these animals and have read a lot about them, I have never worked with these animals. I never had a skunk as a pet, I never tried to rescue a baby opossum, I never even knew anyone personally (only via e-mail) that had done any of this. I freely admitted it. Still -- I'd still get questions.
The questions I got mostly fell into 3 categories.
There's a skunk/opossum on my property -- how do I get rid of it?
I found a baby skunk/opossum -- how do I raise/rescue it?
I'm writing a report on skunks/opossums for school... can you give me info?
For category 1 -- I had written up a FAQ sheet based on information I had gotten off the web, Wisconsin DNR pamphlets, and the book "Outwitting Critters" by Bill Adler, Jr. If none of that applied or would work then any other advice I'd have would be mostly guesswork.
For category 2 -- These were the scary ones because this information is so time critical. I'd only check my e-mail about once or twice a day. A reply 12 hours later could mean the babies are dead. I initially wrote up a FAQ as well but soon decided to leave this purely to the experts. I provided links to other people who have done this regularly and actually know what they're doing.
For category 3 -- Eventually I started ignoring most of these unless they had a very specific question. Most of these e-mails sounded like they were from kids trying to get me to write their school report for them. The Wonderful Skunk and Opossum pages were really meant for the unusual and hard-to-find info. If they wanted basic info there are other web sites for that -- or better yet -- open a book.
I provided links to other people I'd talked to online who said they would be willing to field questions from others [my 'Panel of Experts' page] yet despite all this I'd still get plenty of e-mail directly to me asking these same questions.
Big problem #2, Politics.
After creating the Wonderful Skunk and Opossum web site I got in touch with
an organization that worked with pet skunks and provided information on how
to raise them properly. Later I got in touch with an organization that was dedicated
to opossum rescue and rehab. I was happy to give them links and to plug their
information.
Then I learned of a second pet skunk organization -- apparently a spin-off of the first. The two organizations were bitter rivals. Their advice was similar but differed in a few specifics. The same happened with the opossums, I learned of a second opossum rescue/rehab organization -- also a spin-off of the other, and also bitter rivals.
Now what. If I actually had worked with opossums or had a pet skunk I could justify choosing one organization over the other. The best I could do was to provide links and information from both sides.
I did manage to stay out of any infighting -- but to do so I really felt I could never get 'too close' to either of these groups.
And that's about it.
Eventually I learned more about HTML, perl, and CSS and for a while had been
wanting to give the web site a major overhaul. I had gotten as far as working
out some of the look and organization of the web site and scribbling some pencil
and pen sketches of the overhauled graphics, but after taking it down 'temporarily'
I felt I didn't miss having it up. I was soon free of big problems 1 and 2 and
could focus on other pursuits. Besides -- the world wide web is much older and
bigger now. There are now plenty of sites dedicated to skunks and plenty of
sites dedicated to opossums. The 'need' for my site has for the most part disappeared.
So -- it was fun while it latest. I still have an appreciation for skunks and opossums and still wish the best for anyone's organization dedicated to the betterment of these animals or educating the general public about them but I can no longer afford the time and dedication it would take to make the Wonderful Skunk and Opossum pages truly wonderful.
